The Universal Mirror, by Gwen Perkins

Author's Description
On the island of Cercia, the gods are dead, killed by their followers and replaced with the study of magic. Magicians are forbidden to leave their homeland. Laws bind these men that prevent them from casting spells on the living--whether to harm or to heal.

Quentin, a young nobleman, challenges these laws out of love for his wife. His best friend, Asahel, defies authority at his side, unaware that the search for this lost magic will bring them both to the edge of reason, threatening their very souls. The Universal Mirror shows how far two men are willing to go for the sake of knowledge and what they will destroy to obtain it.

The Universal Mirror is the first novel in the epic fantasy series, Artifacts of Empire. Its sequel, The Jealousy Glass, will be released in November 2012.

My Review

This is an amazing book for fantasy lovers like myself. It’s not exactly for young readers or those who may be bothered by certain factors, such as corpses. There is a lot of suspense, and I am sure a lot of people can relate to the sense of loneliness and lost that the main character, Asahel, feels. Nothing seems to go right ever since two men robbed a grave. It leaves questions and answers, and I cannot wait to read the sequel.

Four stars.

Radar Love (Ultimate Hustle), by Jason Z. Christie

Author's Description
Radar Love introduces you to Chris and Janique, two hard loving anti-heroes who are so in love, they'd rather rob stores and banks than spend their days apart.

It's all fun and games until they end up in connected prisons. Now it's up to Chris to get them out again, using only brutality, heroin, and a book by Tom Robbins... An epic love story, first in the Ultimate Hustle series.

Definitely contains explicit language and situations.

My Review

I’m used to more traditional romance stories, but this was not bad at all! It’s very real so it doesn’t give readers the wrong impression on how a true love story really is. True love stories are not all fairies and roses like many stories make them appear to be. This is clearly an adult novel, but as long as you are not offended by the reality of things, then you should consider reading this book!

Resounding Echo (Angel's Voice Series), by Michelle Louring

Author's Description
The battlefield of angels and demons is no place for a human. With no memory of her past, Selissa grew up without know who or what she was. Her peaceful life ends abruptly, when a strange traveler arrives at the temple where she lives and tells her that everything might not be as it seems. Soon her life is turned upside-down when she realizes that her lost memories hide dark secrets...

Resounding Echo is the first book in the Angel's Voice series, set in the world of Sinaria, and follows the young human woman Selissa as she finds herself in the middle of a struggle between demons and angels.

My Review

A book with a good twist is a good book. The main character is very real in a sense that she does not seem "scripted" - meaning she's realistic and not the perfect character a lot of authors like to create. There are some typos, but once that is fixed it becomes a good read.

Four stars.

Our first goal is to keep them safe. If that means by keeping them at a distance, than that is what we will do.” “No it is time to bring them home and you will see. The time is at hand.” “I feel that same way, but I will still not just have her walk in here and throw it all at them all at one time.” In a voice of yearning Jasmine answers, “I did not tell her anything that I should not have said. She still does not know who we are.” “You may have said too much, you must be honest.” “I will be more careful but I will see her. She is so close now.” Carlo grabbing her and holding her close to him says, “Yes we will both see her. I will not have you out here alone. She is also being followed home. Not just by us but by others that can be trusted. Arthur is a lucky man and some day he may just realize that. He will be our true savior.”

My Review
I like the storyline quite a bit, and that is why I gave it three stars. However, the writing was very hard to read and I found myself confused at points because it didn't flow easily.

The story is kind of like the movie Underworld. Note I say "KIND OF." There are some major differences in it.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but it needs a little work. Have somebody edit it for you.

Three stars.

Steps to Heaven (Sgt Major Crane Novels0, by Wendy Cartmell

Author's Description
Steps to Heaven is the first book in the Sgt Major Crane series. Crane is a Special Investigations Branch Detective in the British Army, based at Aldershot Garrison. He is disturbed by the horrific case of a soldier called Solomon who, after recently returning from Afghanistan, murdered his wife and 6 year old son and then committed suicide. It seems Solomon was attending a local Church, which encourages people to join by offering salvation to its members. But as Crane investigates and the body count rises, events take a darker turn and he wonders what the Church is offering - salvation, or slaughter?

My Review
Steps to Heaven is a good military mystery book. It is based off a murder-suicide that is not unheard of with active duty soldiers. I won't give away the ending, but the end of this ebook leaves you with quiet a bit of questions. Overall a well-written story with a good sense of mystery.

My Review
This book made me smile because it made me remember what it was like to be a kid. Kids have such vivid imaginations that I actually envy them. It is wonderful not to have a care in the world.

I gave this book five stars, but there are some minor tweaks that need to be done with grammer :)

I look foward to reading the second one.

Five stars!

Angst, by S. A. Willaims

Author's Description
At present Laura is speeding to the hospital to discover the truth of several phone messages indicating her once-estranged mother is in trouble. But in the past, Laura has visited her mother in another hospital for very different reasons. As Laura begins to probe how well she and her mother really know one another, her reaction to the present situation disturbs her.

My Review
This is a very short story about a mother who abused drugs that ended with divorce. The story is told by one of her children, who states that they rarely visited their mother, and, although is saddened by the mother's death, is somewhat releived. The reason this sort of touched home for me is that I recently lost a family member, and this short story reminded me of him. They did not die under the same circumstances, but the fact remains the same. I was able to relate somewhat because, although I am sad he is gone, I feel better than he is no longer suffering.

Dragons of Witchcraft, by Tiffany L. Duhart.

Author's Description
How is it possible to hate someone who saved your life? Good nature says everyone deserves a second chance, but they never mention at what cost. Broken, pained, and dying, Paige is offered a deal by someone who promises to save her life, but in exchange for something. He was casual, uncaring, and yet utterly malicious. She wanted to refuse. She wanted to tell him no. She didn’t.

My Review
This story was rather interesting. It is about a teenage girl, Paige, who is broken and at the end of her life. She is saved by something that almost taunts her until she agreed to have him save her life. It came at a cost.

She wakes up feeling normal, but her clothes are burnt and, although she can feel pain, she cannot get hurt, even after jumping off a building.

The demon, Andre, that was after her is actually a dragon who wants to be back in his dragon form, and Paige is the descendent of a witch 300 years ago.

Paige does not have much of a choice but to help Andrea, or she and her family will pay the ultimate price.

Four stars!

My Review
My phone beeped while I was reading this... and it made me jump! I got so into this story and couldn't put it down. There are a couple formatting problems (at least on my kindle, and I have not messed with the settings), but it was not bad at all! My only complain about this story was that it was too short!

I have actually never read a horror-type book before, but this made me very interested in the topic. Will definitely recommend! Four stars!

Justice (Deck of Lies), by Jade Varden

Author's Description:
A House of Cards…

When you build an entire life on a foundation of lies, it only takes one truth for the whole thing to come crashing down. I never invited the truth in. I never went searching for it. I never had any reason to suspect that the two people I loved most were dishonest with me every second of every day.

I made one bad decision, and in a single day my entire world changed. If I’m ever going to discover the truth about myself and my parents, I have to trace all the lies back to their source. I have to try to find the truth that they’re hiding.

The more I discover about myself, and my past, the more I realize that lies really are better than the truth. But now that I know the lies are all around me, I can’t stop until I’ve discovered them all. I’ll pull each lie away, one by one, and examine it to see what’s underneath…until this house of cards crumbles into dust at my feet.

I just hope I can survive the crash.

My Review
I found this book to be refreshingly original. Honestly, I was not sure how this book was going to turn out, but I am glad I gave it a shot. There are twists and turns all throughout the book, and I can only imagine what Rain (the main character) is going through, especially being so young.

High school, and puberty itself, is pretty tough as it is. Trust me, what the average teenager goes through is nothing compared to what happens here!

I give this book five stars!

Read to find out!

My Review
I give this book four stars. I honestly don't see why some people are being so harsh on the storyline! The characters are not perfect, but that's what makes it a good story. Real people aren't perfect, but the fact that they can see each other perfectly is the beauty of it.

The story is about second chances, and it is different than other romance books I have read. It is not very predictable like some others I have read. I enjoyed the book and recommend it. Also, I am looking foward to the next in the series!

You can find this book at Stephanie's store here.
